Sophie’s Circle was founded out of one powerful act of compassion. On what was meant to be her last day at the Southeast Volusia Humane Society, a heartworm-positive Siberian Husky named Sophie was rescued just hours before being euthanized. Despite her grim situation, Sophie remained calm and hopeful—qualities that moved founder Kathy Blackman to take action.
What started as a chance encounter quickly turned into a mission. Sophie’s quiet resilience and loving spirit inspired the creation of Sophie’s Circle, a nonprofit dedicated to saving the lives of homeless and abused animals. Kathy knew that saving Sophie wasn’t enough—there were countless other dogs just like her, waiting for their miracle.
Since 2009, Sophie’s Circle has worked tirelessly to provide second chances for dogs in need, promote responsible pet ownership, and support the bond between animals and the people who love them. Every animal’s life matters—and every day holds the possibility of a miracle. Just ask Sophie.
