Extending Pet Lifespans Through Longevity Science with Dr. Kevin Toman

What if your dog could live 20–30% longer — and better?

In this episode of the Canine Culture Podcast, Brittany sits down with veterinarian Dr. Kevin Toman to talk about the science of extending not just lifespan, but healthspan — the years your dog stays active, engaged, and feeling good.

Dr. Kevin shares how his decades in veterinary medicine — and personal experiences with cancer — led him to focus on longevity science. From integrative therapies and prescription longevity drugs to diet, dental care, and inflammation control, this conversation breaks down what truly impacts how long (and how well) our dogs live.

You’ll learn:

  • The difference between lifespan vs. healthspan — and why it matters

  • Why inflammation is one of the biggest drivers of aging

  • Early warning signs of disease most pet parents overlook

  • The truth about dental disease and why anesthesia-free cleanings aren’t enough

  • How early diagnostics can change long-term outcomes

  • Practical daily habits that support longevity

  • The surprising study that showed dogs fed less lived significantly longer

  • How to evaluate whether you have the right veterinarian for your dog

Dr. Kevin also shares his thoughts on vaccines, supplements, raw vs. processed diets, longevity drugs like rapamycin, and where the future of pet longevity medicine is heading.

If you’ve ever thought, “I would do anything to have more healthy years with my dog,” this episode is for you.

Because extending your dog’s life isn’t just about adding years — it’s about adding quality to those years.

About Dr. Kevin Toman:

Dr. Kevin Toman brings nearly four decades of veterinary experience to pet parents who want their dogs to live longer, healthier, and happier lives. A 1986 graduate of UC Davis, his career evolved from traditional practice into a deep focus on senior pets, cancer care, orthopedics, and quality of life.

Personal health challenges sparked his interest in functional health, natural supplements, and longevity science — eventually leading him to explore emerging therapies like rapamycin. Today, through Helping Pets Live Longer (HPLL), Dr. Kevin blends veterinary medicine, integrative care, and cutting-edge longevity science to support pets no matter where their families live.

Based on California’s central coast, he shares life with his partner Angela and their golden retriever, Anabelle — and remains passionate about helping pets thrive for as long as possible.
