Heartworms and How FOJA is Making an Impact
In Part 2 of our heartworm series, host Brittany continues the conversation with Grace from Friends of Jacksonville Animals (FOJA). This episode goes beyond heartworm education and shines a spotlight on FOJA’s mission to support dogs in Duval County shelters and reduce unnecessary euthanasia.
Grace shares how FOJA helps cover the high costs of heartworm treatment through their “Red Folder Program,” making adoption of heartworm-positive dogs possible for more families. We also discuss the importance of prevention, the realities of heartworm treatment, and why so many adopters shy away from heartworm-positive dogs.
You’ll also learn how FOJA is making a difference by funding critical medical care, providing enrichment items, and organizing community events—all powered by volunteers and donors. Grace highlights ways you can get involved, from fostering and volunteering to attending upcoming events or simply spreading the word on social media.
Whether you’re a local in Jacksonville or tuning in from across the country, this episode will inspire you to be part of the solution in helping shelter dogs find loving homes.

About FOJA:
FOJA, an all volunteer organization, was formed in 2008, and is dedicated to the well-being of homeless animals received by Animal Care and Protective Services. Each year, the shelter takes in thousands of unwanted, abused, and neglected animals. Our focus is to end unnecessary euthanasia, educate the public about responsible pet ownership, and enrich the lives of the shelter animals. All funds donated to FOJA go directly toward achieving these goals.
It is FOJA's mission to help.
